You Make Me Laugh or So Ugly You Are Cute!
For more than a month now, my daughter and I have been taking Wilton cake decorating classes at our local Michael’s store here in Papillion, Nebraska . We have a great instructor and a great group of women who are enjoying cake decorating. We learned many of the interesting techniques from our instructor Mary, who is very helpful in assisting us in each of the step we take, she even offers us to call her any time if we will experience problems in making icings or baking.
My daughter and I decided to use our knowledge in decorating a cake for this coming Valentine’s Day and give it as a surprise to her daddy and loving my husband. And yes, it came out as a big surprise! We picked one of the cutest cake designs from Wilton’s website “You make my heart sing!” We thought that it is going to be easy for us to make this cake even after reading the reviews indicating the opposite.
The original recipe required to use the Wilton’s Cuddly Bear stand up pan set, we decided to use Mini Stand up Bear pan set instead. We decided to make our cake with two layers where the top layer is smaller than the bottom one and the bear or the monster would be sitting on top.
We made our biscuit dough using the same recipe as I used for “Halloween Dragon Cake” and for the icing we beat 3 sticks of unsalted butter with sweetened condensed milk and flavored it with rum.
We colored our icing using the “Ombre Rosette Cake” techniques. Everything was going just fine until we reached to the part where we should be decorating the monster or a “wild thing” this is how it was described in original recipe, and realized that things are not really going that easy…
The dowel plastic rods which suppose to hold wild thing’s arms do not hold the icing very well and the icing was sliding down. I made a decision to cut the bear’s ears and place them on the rods in order to add some structure to the arms and it actually did help, however the hands did not appear the same as they look on the picture on the original recipe.
Anyway we still finished our cake after spending 3 hours working on it and decided to hide it in our second refrigerator in the garage until Valentine’s Day.
I could not keep this as a secret very long because it was discovered almost immediately by my husband…
My husband also had his planes to surprise me and our daughter, he bought a bottle of Champagne for me and some sweet treats for all of us and decided to hide it in the same refrigerator. The first thing that he discovered right after he opened the refrigerator’s door was our cake. He started laughing very hard his sides hurt! He walked in the house continue to laughing , I guess our surprise was not a surprise anymore. Oh well, my husband said that he did not laugh so hard for a long time and this cake is So Ugly it’s Cute! This name from now on sticks to this cake because this is how my daughter and I decided to name it.
On Valentine’s day, we cut our cake, it was a whole ceremony because my husband said that this thing is hard to cut as it is looking at him as a life, he turned the Ugly it’s Cute Cake facing away from him and split it with a knife.
It was a heart breaking moment! The cake came out very delicious and it leaves a great story for our family to remember!
